Segovia Jewish Tour

Tour Description

By definition, the Sephardi Jew is the Jew who descended from the Iberian Peninsula including the territory of Portugal.  There are many cities in Spain, including Toledo, famously known for where the Jews settled and made a prosperous life until their expulsion in the 15th century. Most visitors  don´t think of coming to Segovia to discover the Jewish heritage. Contrary to that thought, there is much to discover when looking for Jewish roots in this region and the Segovia Jewish Tour will help unfold the mysteries of this beautiful city and it´s Sephardic traditions.

Representing a short trip from Madrid, whether by train or car,  Segovia is a great way to spend a day out if you feel like enjoying more nature and the hidden Gems of the Jewish population that resided here, how they lived and the customs they celebrated. In Segovia, there once existed as many as 5 synagogues and today, only one remains.  The good news is that it is accessible to visit when you take a guided tour with Letango.

This is where our tour will begin, with the Corpus Christy Convent, which was the main synagogue built by Muslim Masons.  We will walk the narrow streets of the former Jewish Quarter.  We will talk about the powerful families and their history of conversion upon the expulsion of the Catholic Monarchs.  Our guide will be indicating many other   important points of interest like the 2000 year old Roman Aqueduct. We will also have the opportunity to view the Jewish Cemetery from the hill.

The presence of Jews dates back to the 11th Century.  Their primary trade was commerce, textiles and tanning.  Their industry did so well that the population prospered immensely and their taxpaying contribution to the Royalty was significant. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, Segovia was the birthplace of many scholars and there resided some prominent families and leaders of the community that would not only influence the Jewish community but would play an influence on decisions made by royalty that would affect the future of Spain.  It is well known that these educated men often had the ear of royalty all the way up until their expulsion in 1492 under the Catholic Monarchs. Abraham Senior was a senior advisor to the Queen and helped negotiate the wedding between Queen Isabel of Castille and King Ferdinand of Aragon.
